Halifax & Peggy's Cove

The last time we were here was in 2003. We left our hotel after checking in and drove to Port Hastings for the night because hurricane Juan was on the way. Nobody seemed concerned about it but they should have been. When we came back through there was extensive damage. Trees down, roads blocked, roofs blown off buildings and boats sitting on top of docks all along the waterfront. There were 8 deaths in Halifax attributed to Juan.

The Sheraton Hotel we were going to stay at is about 3 or 4 blocks from the Port of Halifax where the Spirit will dock. We can rent a 7 passenger van near there for less than $100 including taxes and insurance. Peggy's Cove is about 27 miles from Halifax and driving our own van sounds a lot better than taking a bus with 40 or 50 other people not to mention cheaper.

There are several interesting places within walking distance of the ship. The Public Gardens (which were pretty well devastated by hurricane Juan) and the Alexander Kieth's Brewery are a couple of them. We might do that after we turn in the van.

Another way to get around the downtown area is FRED Free Rides Everywhere Downtown. Apparently there is a terminal right across from where we dock. It's a free shuttle bus that makes a loop every 40 minutes. Might be kind of busy though, there will be 2 other ships in port that day for a total of 5,254 of us leaf peepers.
